Step #4
| How to Make Pine cones Look Like Pure Gold
<--
Step #3 |
Step #5 -->
This next step is very exciting. Now we're about to paint
the pine cones to a Superior Gold Lustre. You can paint them
any colour you wish, however I particularly like gold because
its very close to the natural look, but much brighter.
At first we tried using can paint that required brushes.
Whitney really enjoyed dipping her favourite paint brushes in
multi-tubs of colourful paints. She made lots
of multi-coloured (rainbow like) pine cones.
You can add ribbons, sequins, beads – the possibilities are
endless. It’s kind of like decorating Easter eggs – there
doesn’t have to be a set pattern to anything.
But seriously, to make the
Christmas Tree say WOW!
You will want to use a spray paint that can make the pine
cones reflect your mini-lites on the tree. This is how to get
your friends to say their Oh's and Aw's. And feel proud of a
job well done.
There are so many various types of industrial gold paints.
We even tried using glitter dust, but after the cones dried the
lustre would fade and appear dull.
The best paint to use is spray paint. You can even use
a transparent sealer if you want to retain its natural
colour.

We used a Clear Satin transparent sealer to preserve the
original beauty of the pinecone.
It seals, protects and revitalizes for a beautiful, durable
finish. This RUST-OLEUM™ - Painter's Touch can be used Indoor
or Outdoor.
It's fast drying and non-yellowing which is awesome. And
just like the primer sealer, the room must be at room
temperature and the surfaces must be dry and clean before you
spray.

At your right, is a pine cone treated with a transparent
satin primer. See how handsome they are?
We used a variety of Gold Spray Paints to reach the lustre
and beauty we wanted. You can find them in mostly every
hardware or home building store in your area.
The best paint I found was located at a Craft Store. 24KT
Pure Gold gave us an outstanding lustre and shine. At first I
hesitated to purchase it because the top cover was black. So I
thought what the heck, I gave every other paint a chance
why-not this one. Boy! Was I glad I did!

Now we experimented on an ugly tree just to see what the
cones would look like. And the picture I took was with a
digital camera, so as you can see its not the best image I
could present to all you nice folks visiting my site. And by
the way... thanks a million for visiting. Whitney and I hope
that we were helpful in any future plans with your own pinecone
craft projects.

Pine cones can be hung from the tree branches either
upside-down or right-side-up. The choice is yours. Use wire and
wrap the wire around either the top or bottom of the cone,
making sure that you push the wire as far into the opening of
the cone as you can so that it doesn’t show. Form a hook from
the end of the wire, and it is ready to hang on the
tree.
After Christmas wrap each individual decoration
and store them in a big, airtight plastic container if
possible. This will keep air and moisture out, but it won’t
prevent the ornaments from being affected by heat. Therefore,
if your ornaments may suffer from heat, don’t store them
outdoors or in attics. Instead, store them in a closet,
basement or spare room.
Note that you don’t want your decorations ‘squashed’
by other, heavier decorations. Place your decorations into the
container carefully. Put a piece of cardboard over top each
pine cone layer.
By making your own decorations, you will find that
Christmas is indeed special.
Not only can you say ‘I made that
myself’ when you are complimented, but by
including the whole family in Christmas projects, you will all
be sharing this special time of the year together – more
closely.
